Fresh military strikes between the United States and Iran have intensified regional tensions, with Iran reporting casualties after US attacks on several provinces, while Tehran launched retaliatory strikes targeting US-linked facilities in the Gulf.
Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 14 people were killed and 78 others injured after US strikes hit five Iranian provinces on July 8 and 9. Officials said 47 injured people remain under treatment, while others were discharged after receiving medical care.
Three people were reportedly killed in a strike near Ahvaz in southwestern Iran, according to Iranian state media. The latest attacks came after the collapse of a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
The renewed conflict has also affected maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Shipping traffic through the strategic waterway has slowed significantly following continued military exchanges.
Iran claimed it carried out drone attacks against US-linked locations in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, saying the operations targeted military and strategic sites. Bahrain said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed several incoming aerial threats.
Qatar condemned attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and called for dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stressed the importance of protecting international maritime security.
The latest confrontation began after the US military announced new strikes on Iran, saying the action was aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on commercial ships.
Iran accused the United States of violating previous commitments and warned that any further attacks would face a stronger response.
US President Donald Trump warned that American strikes would increase if Iran continued targeting ships in the region. He said Washington would respond forcefully to any further attacks.
The exchange of attacks has raised concerns over regional stability and the future of diplomatic efforts between the two countries. Iran and the US had earlier agreed on a temporary understanding aimed at reducing tensions, but recent developments have created uncertainty over whether negotiations will continue.
