Fresh violence rocks Manipur, four killed in attack

IMPHAL: A fresh outbreak of violence in India’s northeastern state of Manipur has raised new concerns over security and the government’s ability to contain an ethnic conflict that has already caused widespread displacement and loss of life.

According to reports cited by Indian media, an armed attack in Kangpokpi district left four people dead, one injured and another missing. The victims were reportedly members of the Naga community.

Local residents have alleged that Kuki militants were behind the attack. The allegations, however, have not been independently established, and the situation remains tense as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Reports of violence have also emerged from Senapati district, where attacks on Kuki farmers were reported, adding to concerns that the conflict is spreading beyond the traditional lines of confrontation.

The latest incidents came just one day after a peace meeting in Manipur, highlighting the fragile nature of attempts to restore stability in the troubled state.

Manipur has been gripped by ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes largely involving the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities erupted over long-standing disputes surrounding land, political representation and affirmative-action policies. Thousands of people have been displaced since the conflict began, while communities on both sides have accused armed groups and security forces of abuses.

Indian media reports have described the latest violence as another indication of the state’s difficult security environment.
