A FIFA spokesperson said Infantino’s decision to contest the upcoming presidential election remains unchanged. The 56-year-old football administrator had announced in April that he would seek re-election for another term.

If successful, Infantino would remain FIFA president until 2031.

Infantino has faced criticism over a controversial proposal known as FIFA Forward Enterprise, which aimed to attract private investment into FIFA-related projects and events. The plan drew opposition from several quarters and was eventually abandoned.

The proposal also led to tensions with UEFA, European football’s governing body. UEFA opposed the initiative and its leadership has been critical of Infantino’s approach on the issue.

However, Infantino continues to enjoy support from other major football confederations. CONCACAF, the governing body for football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have backed his leadership.

The possibility of a challenge to Infantino has also emerged. CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani has been mentioned as a potential rival in the presidential race. Meanwhile UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has already ruled out running for the FIFA presidency.

At present, Infantino is the only officially declared candidate for the election.

To secure another term, Infantino will need a simple majority of the votes from FIFA’s 211 member associations. The deadline for presidential candidates to submit their nomination documents is November 18.

Infantino first became FIFA president in 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter, and has since remained at the center of global football administration. His tenure has included major changes to FIFA’s competitions, finances and international football strategy while also attracting criticism over governance and commercial initiatives.

The upcoming election could therefore become an important test of Infantino’s continued influence within world football. His ability to secure broad support among FIFA’s member associations will determine whether he enters what would be his final term.

If re-elected, Infantino would continue leading the world football governing body through 2031 making the upcoming vote a significant moment for the future direction of FIFA.
