Gilgit-Baltistan voters must shape their own destiny through democratic participation, says senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri

Islamabad: Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate of Pakistan and Chairman of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Pakistan, has urged the people of Gilgit-Baltistan to actively participate in the upcoming elections on June 7 and make informed decisions through the power of their vote.

In a public statement, Senator Jafri stressed that the elections represent far more than the selection of political representatives. He described the electoral process as a defining moment for the future of Gilgit-Baltistan, with implications for the region’s constitutional status, political rights, economic progress, and long-term development. He encouraged citizens to support candidates who demonstrate integrity, competence, commitment to public service, and dedication to fulfilling their promises.

Highlighting the importance of democratic participation, the senator stated that voting is both a constitutional right and a civic responsibility. He noted that every vote carries the potential to influence the future direction of the region and should therefore be exercised thoughtfully. According to him, voters should carefully assess which candidates have the ability and determination to defend public interests, uphold democratic values, and work sincerely for the welfare of their communities.

Senator Jafri also referred to the political cooperation between Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Pakistan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), noting that both parties have jointly supported candidates in a number of constituencies. He said this collaboration reflects a common vision focused on protecting public rights, promoting transparent governance, and accelerating development initiatives throughout Gilgit-Baltistan. He expressed optimism that the electorate would make choices that serve the best interests of the region.

Calling for a credible and transparent electoral process, the senator urged the Election Commission, administrative authorities, and all institutions involved in election management to perform their duties with complete impartiality. He emphasized that maintaining the integrity of the electoral process is essential to preserving public confidence in democratic institutions.

He further stated that election officials and polling staff have a critical responsibility to ensure that every vote is counted fairly and accurately. Any attempt to manipulate the process, interfere with voters’ choices, or influence election results, he warned, would undermine public trust and weaken democratic principles.

The senator underscored the strategic and national importance of Gilgit-Baltistan, describing it as a region whose people have long sought greater constitutional recognition and equal rights. Given these aspirations, he said, it is imperative that the voices of the people are respected and that elections are conducted in a manner that reflects the genuine will of the electorate.
