The government has finalised arrangements to export 200,000 metric tonnes of surplus sugar and decided to establish a monitoring committee to regularly review sugar prices in the domestic market.
The decisions were taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee for the Export of Surplus Sugar, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The meeting was attended by federal ministers, senior government officials and representatives of relevant departments. Officials discussed the remaining requirements for the sugar export plan and measures to monitor prices in the local market.
Dar directed the concerned ministries and departments to complete the pending formalities and accelerate the process so that the export plan could move forward without unnecessary delays.
The government said the initiative is aimed at supporting the sugar industry and sugarcane growers while generating additional foreign exchange through exports.
