Hayden Panettiere’s boyfriend Brian Hickerson’s past abuse case resurfaces after her death

Hayden Panettiere’s tragic death has brought renewed attention to the actress’s complicated relationship with Brian Hickerson, including a legal setback he faced only days before her passing.

Panettiere, best known for Heroes and Nashville, died at the age of 36 on August 16, 2026. Her death remains under investigation, and authorities have said there were no initial signs of foul play. An autopsy reportedly found no signs of trauma, while the official cause of death has not yet been determined. 

Just three days before Panettiere died, a judge rejected Hickerson’s request to reduce his previous felony domestic abuse convictions to misdemeanors and have them dismissed. The ruling came during a hearing on August 13, according to reports citing the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. 

Hickerson had pleaded no contest in April 2021 to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend. The charges followed a series of incidents involving Panettiere between 2019 and 2020. He was originally facing eight felony counts connected to the alleged abuse. 

As part of his 2021 sentence, Hickerson received 45 days in county jail, four years of formal probation, 52 domestic violence classes and a five-year restraining order. He ultimately served 33 days after receiving credit for time previously spent in custody. 

The legal history has resurfaced because of its timing. Hickerson had previously tried to have the felony convictions reduced or dismissed in 2025, but that request was also unsuccessful. His latest petition noted that he had completed the conditions of his probation. 

Panettiere had spoken publicly about the abuse in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. She described how difficult it was to completely break away from an abusive relationship. Hickerson later acknowledged responsibility for some of the incidents discussed in the book, while also reflecting on his own struggles with substance abuse. 

The pair’s relationship began in 2018 and continued on and off for several years. Despite their turbulent history, they later reconnected, with Hickerson publicly discussing their relationship and acknowledging that they were not necessarily good for each other. 

Hickerson was reportedly with Panettiere around the time of her death, adding another layer of public interest to their complicated history. However, there is currently no evidence that Hickerson was responsible for Panettiere’s death, and authorities have not indicated that the two matters are connected. 

As fans continue mourning Panettiere, her past struggles are once again receiving attention. Yet her legacy extends far beyond her difficult personal experiences. Through Nashville, Heroes and other performances, she left behind a career that made a lasting impression on audiences around the world.
