Hayden Panettiere was the mother of one daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, whom she shared with her former fiancé, professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko. The actress had openly spoken about her difficult journey with postpartum depression, addiction and motherhood throughout the years.
Panettiere and Klitschko welcomed their daughter in 2014. However, after struggling with postpartum depression and addiction, Panettiere voluntarily transferred full custody of Kaya to Klitschko in 2018. Kaya later spent most of her time living with her father in Europe and Ukraine.
The actress discussed her experience with postpartum depression in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. She revealed that after a difficult labor and emergency surgery, she struggled to feel an emotional connection with her newborn daughter.
Panettiere wrote that she felt almost nothing when she first met Kaya and found it extremely difficult to bond with her. She described the experience as an overwhelming challenge that began immediately after giving birth.
The actress also revealed how her postpartum depression affected her daily life. According to her memoir, she began relying heavily on alcohol after Kaya’s birth. Around four months after becoming a mother, she was reportedly drinking a bottle of wine every night and using alcohol in the morning to get through the day.
At that time, Panettiere was also working on the television series Nashville, which ran from 2012 to 2018. She eventually entered treatment between the show’s third and fourth seasons and was diagnosed with postpartum depression.
Panettiere later made the difficult decision to allow Kaya to live primarily with her father. Although being separated from her daughter was extremely painful, she said she believed it was the right decision while she focused on her recovery.
In her memoir, Panettiere described Kaya as the greatest gift of her life. She also expressed how deeply she missed her daughter and emphasized that she would always love and support her.
Panettiere’s death has now brought renewed attention to her family situation. The actress, who was known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died on August 16 at the age of 36 at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office ruled that her death was caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine. Officials reported that there were no signs of trauma and classified the manner of death as accidental.
Following her death, Wladimir Klitschko has reportedly taken legal steps concerning their daughter’s future and inheritance.
On Monday, September 28, reports revealed that Klitschko filed an urgent petition in a Los Angeles County court seeking permission to act as the temporary representative of his 11-year-old daughter’s estate.
Kaya is reportedly Panettiere’s sole heir. The petition states that legal protection is needed to safeguard the inheritance she may receive from her late mother.
The filing reportedly raises concerns about items connected to a federal investigation, unauthorized individuals allegedly accessing Panettiere’s Los Angeles residence and valuables that may be missing.
Klitschko is asking the court to grant him temporary legal authority to protect Kaya’s financial interests and inheritance. The petition describes the request as urgent and necessary to ensure that the actress’s estate remains protected for her daughter.
A court hearing regarding the matter has been scheduled for October 8.
Panettiere’s story has also highlighted the serious impact postpartum depression can have on mothers. The condition can involve extreme sadness, anxiety and exhaustion, making everyday responsibilities difficult. Many women may also remain undiagnosed, sometimes believing they are simply experiencing the temporary “baby blues.”
For Panettiere, her struggle with postpartum depression and addiction became an important part of her personal journey. Despite the painful separation from her daughter, she continued to describe Kaya as the most important gift in her life.
