Addressing the House of Commons, the Home Secretary said the annual Ijtima was expected to attract more than 10,000 Muslims over the weekend before it was disrupted by the security threat.
She confirmed that Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation and that 12 individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged plot.
“This weekend’s Ijtima in Barham was due to be attended by over 10,000 Muslims. Instead, it ended early after a credible extreme right-wing terrorism-related threat to the lives of those present,” she told MPs.
The Home Secretary said public safety remains the Government’s highest priority and praised the swift response of the police and security services in protecting those attending the event.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have urged the public not to speculate while enquiries continue.
