It is no secret that water is essential for good health but a new medical study has found that including tea and coffee in daily routines may offer additional benefits and could even support a longer life.
A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that antioxidant-rich beverages such as coffee and tea help benefit body cells. The research discovered that people who consume around 7 to 8 cups of combined beverages such as tea, coffee and water daily have a lower risk of premature death from any cause.
It further noted that a combination of 2 cups of coffee and 3 cups of tea per day can reduce the risk of premature death by up to 45%. Unlike many previous studies that examined tea and coffee separately, this research analyzed the combined effects of both beverages.
For this purpose, data from more than 182,000 individuals was examined. Their health was tracked over a period of 13 years, during which detailed questionnaires were used to record daily consumption of coffee, tea and water.
The results showed that while water remains essential for health adding antioxidant-rich drinks like tea and coffee to daily routines can improve metabolic functions.
The antioxidants found in these beverages such as polyphenols help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. This may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic disorders not only affect blood sugar and body weight but also increase the risk of heart disease, reduce energy levels and accelerate aging.
In contrast, drinks that reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity and support vascular health can extend lifespan and improve quality of life. Coffee contains a compound called chlorogenic acid which helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and improves metabolic functions.
Tea, on the other hand, contains antioxidants called catechins which reduce inflammation, improve metabolism and may help with weight control. Overall, the combination of tea and coffee appears to have multiple positive effects on the body.
However, researchers also noted limitations: excessive caffeine intake may increase heart rate, cause anxiety and sleep disturbances and excessive water intake may also disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance.
