IHC calls PTI protest case a ‘constitutional crisis’

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Sarfraz Dogar has described the case concerning Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned protest on September 27 as resembling a constitutional crisis.

The development came during the hearing of a petition related to the PTI’s proposed protest, where the Islamabad High Court decided to constitute a larger bench to examine the matter.

Justice Sarfraz Dogar highlighted the sensitivity of the case and directed the court to take a broader view of the legal and constitutional issues involved. In view of the significance of the matter, the court also issued a notice to the Attorney General for Pakistan.

The IHC further summoned the inspectors general of police (IGPs) and advocate generals of all four provinces in their personal capacity. The court also directed the Islamabad Chief Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Inspector General of Police to appear before the bench personally.

The court’s decision to involve senior federal and provincial officials reflects the seriousness with which it is treating the dispute surrounding the PTI protest. The proceedings are expected to focus on the legal framework governing public gatherings, security arrangements and the constitutional rights involved.

The Islamabad High Court adjourned further proceedings until September 10, when the larger bench is expected to take up the matter and hear the responses from the officials and government representatives summoned by the court.
