China entered half-time with a narrow 31-29 advantage but Iran responded strongly after the break. The Iranian side took control during the third quarter outscoring China to establish a 55-46 lead heading into the final period.

China attempted to mount a late comeback but Iran remained composed under pressure and protected its advantage until the final buzzer. The victory sparked emotional celebrations among the Iranian players as they secured a place on the Asian Games podium.

The medal carried particular significance for the team following an extremely difficult period away from the court. Iran forward Arsalan Kazemi described the moment as overwhelming, saying he was “speechless” after the team had endured months of pressure.

Kazemi, who stands 202cm tall made history in 2013 when he became the first Iranian player to be drafted by an NBA team, the Washington Wizards. However, he never appeared in a regular-season NBA game.

Speaking after the bronze-medal victory, Kazemi said the pressure experienced by the players and their families had been immense. He dedicated the achievement to the people of Iran and said the team had given everything on the court in an effort to bring happiness to their supporters.

Another Iranian forward, Arman Zangeneh also highlighted the difficult journey the squad had experienced before reaching the Asian Games podium.

Zangeneh said the team had faced a demanding schedule including travelling to the Philippines for qualifying matches before immediately heading to the Asian Games. He also described the team’s living conditions during the campaign as extremely challenging.

Despite those difficulties, Iran managed to finish the tournament with a bronze medal.

Zangeneh also noted that winning an Asian Games medal can have significant consequences for some Iranian athletes because of military-service requirements.

The 79-70 victory over China capped a challenging campaign for Iran and gave the team a place on the podium. For the players, the bronze medal represented not only their performance on the basketball court but also the culmination of months of demanding travel competition and difficult circumstances.

The result also provided Iran with a memorable finish to its Asian Games basketball campaign, while China had to settle for fourth place.
