Iran rules out talks during Doha visit

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, has said that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s upcoming visit to Doha is solely intended to offer condolences to Qatar following the death of the country’s former emir, and not to hold political or diplomatic negotiations.

Speaking to the media, Baghaei clarified that the visit should not be interpreted as an opportunity for talks with any party. He stressed that Iran currently has no plans to engage in negotiations and that the purpose of the trip remains limited to expressing sympathy and solidarity with the Qatari leadership during a period of national mourning.

Baghaei also criticized the United States over its approach to previous agreements, accusing Washington of failing to fulfill the commitments it had accepted under a memorandum of understanding. According to him, the US abandoned its responsibilities despite the obligations outlined in the agreement, undermining the basis for continued cooperation.

He argued that when one side chooses not to honor its commitments, it becomes difficult for the other side to continue meeting its own obligations. Baghaei said Iran’s response reflects this reality, adding that Tehran cannot be expected to uphold agreements unilaterally while the other party fails to do the same.

His remarks come at a time when diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States remain high, with both countries continuing to exchange criticism over previous understandings and regional issues. Although speculation has circulated about the possibility of renewed contacts, Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that no negotiations are currently planned under the existing circumstances.

Baghaei’s comments reinforce Tehran’s position that any future diplomatic engagement depends on mutual respect and the implementation of commitments by all parties involved. For now, Iran maintains that the foreign minister’s visit to Qatar carries a humanitarian and ceremonial purpose rather than a political or negotiating agenda.
