ISLAMABAD: Authorities have introduced enhanced security measures for Muharram in the federal capital, including drone surveillance, digital monitoring, and a comprehensive deployment of security forces.
Officials confirmed that all imambargahs, majalis locations, and procession routes in Islamabad have been geo-tagged. This step is aimed at improving monitoring and ensuring quick emergency response during religious gatherings.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a high-level meeting to review the security plan. He was briefed by senior officials on arrangements made for Muharram processions and gatherings across the city.
A new mobile application named “Mehfooz Muharram” has been launched. Citizens can use it to report suspicious activity, security concerns, or inadequate arrangements. The app also includes live location sharing and image upload features.
A central control room has been set up at the Safe City headquarters. From there, officials will monitor events using a network of more than 3,000 CCTV cameras installed across the city.
Drone surveillance will also be used to observe major processions and sensitive areas in real time. Authorities said this will help improve situational awareness and response time.
Security officials said a strict four-layer security system will be implemented. Entry and exit points of all processions and gatherings will be checked thoroughly.
More than 15,000 security personnel, including police and Rangers, will be deployed across Islamabad. They will be stationed at sensitive routes, venues, and key checkpoints.
Traffic police have also prepared a special plan to manage movement during religious events. Over 500 traffic officers will be on duty to reduce congestion and ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Officials said around 170 processions and more than 900 religious gatherings are expected in the capital during Muharram.
Senior police officers, including DIGs and SSPs, will supervise field arrangements directly. Additional vigilance teams have also been formed to monitor security staff performance.
Search and combing operations have been intensified in various parts of the city as a preventive measure against any potential threats.
Authorities have also instructed close coordination with religious scholars and organisers. They emphasized maintaining peace, discipline, and inter-sect harmony during the religious month.
Officials further directed strict action against hate material or any content that could provoke sectarian tension.
The security plan will remain active throughout the Muharram period to ensure peace, safety, and orderly conduct of all religious activities in Islamabad.
