KARACHI: Residents of Karachi finally experienced much-needed relief from the intense heat that had gripped the city for several days as strong sea breezes lowered temperatures and reduced the severity of the ongoing heatwave. The change in weather conditions brought comfort to citizens who had been struggling with unusually high temperatures and humid conditions across the metropolitan area.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the heatwave affecting Sindh is expected to come to an end from today, providing respite to millions of people across the province. Meteorologists noted that changing atmospheric conditions, coupled with stronger sea winds, have contributed significantly to the decline in temperatures and the easing of heat-related discomfort.

Data released by the PMD showed that Karachi’s maximum temperature on Friday was recorded at 36.5 degrees Celsius, marking a noticeable drop of 3.5 degrees compared to the previous day. On Thursday, the city had experienced much harsher conditions when temperatures climbed to 40 degrees Celsius, intensifying concerns about heat-related illnesses and public health risks.

Although humidity levels remained relatively high at around 65 percent, residents reported that the weather felt considerably more comfortable due to the presence of strong southwesterly winds. These winds, which reached speeds of up to 42 kilometres per hour, helped improve airflow across the city and reduced the oppressive effect of the humid atmosphere.

Meteorological experts explained that increased cloud cover and stronger-than-normal sea breezes played a crucial role in moderating temperatures. The combination of these weather factors prevented further heat buildup during the day and provided relief to residents in many parts of the city.

The Met Office has forecast that Karachi will continue to experience hot and humid conditions over the coming days. However, weather experts believe that temperatures are likely to remain lower than the levels recorded during the peak of the recent heatwave. Strong winds are also expected to persist, particularly on Monday, helping to maintain relatively favourable conditions compared to previous days.

Meanwhile, the PMD’s Early Warning Centre has indicated that the broader heatwave affecting various parts of Sindh is expected to weaken significantly from today. Forecasters have predicted changing weather patterns in several districts of the province, with the possibility of dust storms, gusty winds, thunderstorms and light rainfall at isolated locations.

The districts likely to experience these weather developments include Kashmore, Shikarpur, Ghotki, Jamshoro, Dadu, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Khairpur, Umerkot and Tharparkar. These areas may witness brief periods of unsettled weather as atmospheric conditions continue to evolve.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions during periods of strong winds and stormy weather. Officials warned that powerful gusts and squalls could potentially damage weak structures, temporary shelters, electricity poles, trees and roadside billboards. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather events and to secure loose objects that may become hazardous during strong winds.

The recent improvement in weather conditions has been welcomed by residents across Karachi and other parts of Sindh. While temperatures are expected to remain seasonally warm, the end of the heatwave is likely to bring significant relief and reduce the risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and outdoor workers.
