Karachi unrest: Sharjeel Memon warns against violence

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has strongly condemned incidents of arson, vandalism and disruption reported in Karachi, saying political activities cannot justify creating unrest or putting citizens at risk.

In a statement, Memon said spreading disorder in the city for political purposes was deeply regrettable. He stressed that the government would not allow anyone to hold Karachi hostage in the name of protest or create fear and panic among residents.

The senior minister acknowledged that the Jamaat-e-Islami has the constitutional right to stage peaceful protests. However, he made it clear that this right does not extend to damaging public property, setting vehicles or other objects on fire, blocking roads or disturbing public order.

Memon warned that anyone attempting to challenge the writ of the state would face strict legal action. He directed that individuals involved in arson, road blockades, vandalism or other acts of violence should be identified and brought before the law.

He said the government would distinguish between peaceful protesters and elements involved in violence or property damage, adding that no group would receive permission to exploit political demonstrations to create law-and-order problems in the city.

Memon further emphasized that protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the government’s foremost responsibility. He said the authorities would take all necessary steps to maintain peace, ensure the smooth movement of citizens and protect public and private property across Karachi.
