KARACHI: A 30-year-old woman died after her abaya and dupatta became entangled in the rotating wheel of a water pump while she was operating it at her home near Lee Market police said on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Umrana, wife of Naseem. Following the incident, her body was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi for the completion of legal and procedural formalities.
According to Napier SHO Arif Tanoli, the incident occurred at a three-storey residential building where a water section pump had been installed underneath the staircase on the ground floor.
Initial police investigations suggest that the woman had gone to operate the water pump while wearing an abaya. As she switched on the pump, her abaya and dupatta reportedly became caught in the rotating wheel. She suffered fatal injuries as a result of the incident.
Police said no one else was present at the location at the time of the accident. As a result there was reportedly no one immediately available to assist the woman.
The SHO said the woman also appeared to have experienced fear and panic during the incident. Police subsequently completed the required legal procedures and handed over her body to her family.
SHO Arif Tanoli also rejected reports suggesting that the woman had died after receiving an electric shock. He further denied claims that the incident involved a motorcycle wheel.
