SIALKOT: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that Sialkot is entering a new phase of development, with several major infrastructure projects expected to improve transportation, reduce traffic congestion and support the city’s economic growth.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Faiz Ahmed Faiz Flyover, the minister said the project reflects the government’s commitment to improving public infrastructure and providing better facilities to citizens.

He said the flyover has been named after renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz as a tribute to his literary contributions and lasting influence on Urdu poetry. According to the minister, dedicating the project to Faiz Ahmed Faiz is a way of honouring one of the country’s most celebrated literary figures.

Khawaja Asif said the newly inaugurated flyover will help improve traffic flow in Sialkot by reducing congestion and making daily travel easier for commuters. He added that such development projects are aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents and supporting the city’s expanding commercial activities.

The defence minister said his party believes in serving the public through practical development initiatives rather than political slogans. He added that improving road infrastructure remains one of the government’s key priorities.

Criticising the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, Khawaja Asif said the flyover project remained incomplete during its tenure despite having the opportunity to finish it. He said the current government is working to complete delayed development projects across the country.

The minister announced that work on the first phase of the Sialkot Ring Road will begin soon. He said the project will improve traffic management and provide better connectivity for residents, businesses and industrial areas.

He also said construction work on the Kharian Motorway is progressing at a fast pace. According to the minister, the motorway will strengthen regional connectivity, reduce travel time and promote economic activity in surrounding areas.

Khawaja Asif praised Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, saying she has given special attention to the development and beautification of Sialkot. He said the provincial government has allocated billions of rupees for development schemes aimed at upgrading roads, public facilities and urban infrastructure in the city.
