Khuhro regrets remarks about Asim Munir

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader and Sindh president Nisar Khuhro has expressed regret over remarks he made about Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying his words were not intended in the manner they were understood.

In a statement, Khuhro said his comments made a day earlier had been unintentional in their meaning. He expressed regret and said he held the dignity of the institution in high regard.

Khuhro added that he was sorry if his remarks had caused any misunderstanding.

His clarification followed comments he made at a seminar on the creation of new provinces, where he criticised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s proposal for establishing additional administrative units.

While responding to Naqvi’s remarks, Khuhro questioned the decision to involve the army chief in the political debate. He said the Pakistan Army was responsible for defending the country’s borders and argued that bringing the institution into political discussions could affect its dignity.

Khuhro also criticised Naqvi’s political ambitions, saying that becoming prime minister could not be achieved through such statements and would ultimately depend on public support.

The debate over new provinces intensified after Naqvi called for additional administrative units in July, arguing that structural changes were needed to improve governance, ensure justice and create greater opportunities for young people.

The proposal later drew comments from Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, who said an administrative reset could be considered if necessary to improve governance.

The issue has triggered disagreement among political parties in Sindh. While the Muttahida Qaumi Movement has supported the creation of new administrative units, the PPP and Sindhi nationalist groups have opposed any move to divide the province.
