LONDON: King Charles III, Queen Camilla and Prince William are preparing for a rare joint public engagement to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly planning their own joint appearance in the United Kingdom this week.
According to sources , who shared the announcement on Instagram on Monday, October 12, the King, Queen and Prince of Wales will visit Aberfan in South Wales on October 21 to honour the victims of the devastating tragedy.
The Aberfan disaster occurred on October 21, 1966, when a coal waste tip collapsed and sent a massive flow of debris into the Welsh village. The catastrophe claimed 144 lives, including 116 children and 28 adults, making it one of the most tragic mining-related disasters in British history.
The forthcoming royal visit will commemorate those who lost their lives and recognise the lasting impact of the disaster on the affected families and community. The joint appearance by Charles, Camilla and William will mark six decades since the tragedy.
English also highlighted a particularly emotional aspect of the planned visit involving King Charles. The monarch has reportedly requested a meeting with Gareth Jones, who was six years old when the late Prince Philip visited Aberfan the day after the disaster.
A black-and-white photograph from that period shows the young boy meeting the Duke of Edinburgh. According to English, Jones survived after a school caretaker pulled him through a classroom window. The caretaker, however, suffered a devastating personal loss, as two of his own sons died in the disaster.
The photograph remains a poignant reminder of the human cost of the tragedy and the suffering experienced by the village. The reported meeting between Charles and Jones is expected to bring a personal dimension to the anniversary commemorations.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare for UK appearance
Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing for their first joint public engagement in the United Kingdom since returning to the country in late August.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are scheduled to visit Nottingham on Thursday, October 15, for a series of activities involving community organisations and initiatives supporting local residents.
The couple, who have two children, are expected to visit CRS Nottingham, where they are reportedly due to participate in an acting workshop. The engagement is expected to provide an opportunity to interact with people involved in creative activities.
Their itinerary also reportedly includes a visit to a local food bank, where they will meet women associated with the Grenfell Hubb Community Kitchen. The community kitchen became widely recognised for its role in bringing people together through food and supporting residents following the Grenfell Tower fire.
Harry and Meghan are also expected to meet representatives of Epic Partners, an organisation that supports young people through sports programmes.
The reported engagements place members of the British royal family in the spotlight during the same week, although their activities have different purposes. While Charles, Camilla and William will focus on remembering victims of a historic tragedy, Harry and Meghan are expected to participate in community-focused initiatives in Nottingham.
Both visits are attracting attention as the royal family prepares for a series of public engagements across the United Kingdom.
