French actor Vincent Cassel has lent his voice to Napoleon Bonaparte in English for Valor Mortis an upcoming horror video game that combines historical warfare with terrifying supernatural elements.
Developed by Polish studio One More Level the game takes players into an alternate version of 19th-century Europe where Napoleon’s army uses a mysterious substance to gain extraordinary strength. However, the substance has horrifying consequences transforming soldiers into zombies and monstrous, animal-like creatures.
According to One More Level co-founder Radoslaw Ratusznik the studio initially contacted Cassel’s representatives almost as a joke. The team was surprised when discussions progressed and the actor agreed to participate.
Cassel, known internationally for films including Ocean’s Twelve and Black Swan as well as his acclaimed work in French cinema said his family background helped draw him to the project.
The 59-year-old actor explained that he has Corsican roots through his mother. Growing up, he frequently heard stories about Napoleon, whose legacy remains deeply connected to Corsican culture. He recalled that portraits of the French emperor were common in the homes of many Corsican families.
Cassel also shared that his grandmother and aunt used to joke that Napoleon was a distant relative reflecting the close-knit nature of life on the Mediterranean island.
Although the actor has not publicly explained his experience of portraying Napoleon in English Ratusznik said the language choice was driven by commercial considerations. The Krakow-based studio, which previously developed Ghostrunner is working to reach a broad international audience.
Ratusznik noted that smaller development teams must make difficult decisions about which features to include in a game. French-language voice acting could be introduced later if enough players request it.
Valor Mortis is scheduled to launch on Tuesday offering players a horror-driven interpretation of the Napoleonic era. Its combination of historical inspiration supernatural transformations and brutal action is intended to deliver a distinctive gaming experience.
