PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has directed authorities to take immediate steps to launch an electric scooter scheme for women in the province.

The directives were issued during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The meeting reviewed plans for providing electric scooters to female students and working women.

Officials briefed the meeting about the proposed rollout of the scheme. They said Peshawar would be included in the first phase.

Female students and working women in the provincial capital will receive priority under the initial phase. The government aims to improve their access to educational institutions and workplaces.

Officials said the programme would later be expanded to other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The expansion will allow more women to benefit from the transport facility.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the initiative was aimed at making daily travel easier and safer for women.

He said electric scooters could help women reach schools, colleges, universities and workplaces without facing major transportation difficulties.

The chief minister also highlighted the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. He said the use of electric scooters would help reduce air pollution.

According to the provincial government, promoting electric transport can also support cleaner mobility in urban areas. The initiative is therefore being viewed as both a women’s mobility programme and an environmental measure.

Sohail Afridi directed the relevant authorities to speed up preparations for the scheme. He called for immediate action to ensure that the programme is implemented without unnecessary delays.

The authorities will now work on the necessary arrangements for providing scooters to eligible women in Peshawar.

The first phase will serve as the starting point for the wider provincial programme. The government plans to extend the initiative to other districts after its initial implementation.

The scheme is expected to support women who depend on public transport for their daily travel. It could also provide greater independence to students and working women.
