Kundi calls for clarity on Sohail Afridi’s future as KP CM

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said that it is unclear whether Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is leaving office and former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur is returning, adding that he would approve Afridi’s resignation if it is formally submitted through the proper channel.

According to a statement issued by the Governor House Kundi has contacted the federal government and spoken to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif about convening a meeting of the federal cabinet in Peshawar.

Kundi also called for the federal cabinet meeting on law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to be held at the Governor House. He said he had met the relevant minister and requested that a meeting of the Apex Committee also be convened in Peshawar.

Commenting on reports about a possible change in the provincial leadership, Kundi said it was unclear whether Sohail Afridi was leaving and Ali Amin Gandapur was returning.

The governor also criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), saying that the party was currently not in a position to hold either a long or short march. He said repeatedly announcing and changing dates would not resolve the situation.

Kundi further alleged that Afridi had condemned drone attacks but had not condemned quadcopter attacks originating from Afghanistan. He questioned why the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had not introduced a resolution in the provincial assembly against such attacks.

The governor said the provincial government should clarify its position on the issue.

Regarding Afridi’s reported resignation, Kundi reiterated that he would accept it if a formal resignation was received from the Chief Minister’s House through the proper constitutional channel.

The comments come amid continuing political tensions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A petition challenging Sohail Afridi’s election as chief minister is also being heard by the Federal Constitutional Court which issued notices to Afridi and other parties earlier this month.
