Legendary designer Bob Mackie dies at 87

Legendary American fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie, whose dazzling creations helped define the glamorous looks of stars including Cher, Dolly Parton, Tina Turner and Miley Cyrus, has died at the age of 87.

News of Mackie’s death was shared through his official social media accounts. A statement described him as a designer who fulfilled his lifelong dream of working in fashion and costume design.

Mackie rose to prominence through his work in television, stage and film. His long-standing collaboration with Cher became one of the most defining partnerships of his career. He created many of her memorable outfits for television appearances, concerts and public events.

He was also closely associated with The Carol Burnett Show, where he served as costume designer and created a wide range of looks for Burnett and other performers. His elaborate use of sequins, rhinestones, feathers and bold silhouettes earned him affectionate nicknames such as the “Sultan of Sequins” and “Guru of Glitter.”

Mackie’s influence extended far beyond the entertainment industry. His dramatic designs became a major part of popular culture, while his archive continued to attract younger performers and fashion enthusiasts decades after many of his most famous creations first appeared.

During his distinguished career, Mackie received nine Emmy Awards and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. He earned three Academy Award nominations and later won a Tony Award for The Cher Show. He was also honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Fashion figures have credited Mackie with influencing modern red-carpet dressing. His daring creations, including illusion-style dresses decorated with strategically placed embellishments, helped establish a style that remains visible in contemporary celebrity fashion.
