SHEIKHUPURA: Executive Engineer (XEN) of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) Malik Rab Yar Phularwan was shot dead by unidentified assailants on GT Road near Muridke late Wednesday night.
According to initial information, Phularwan had been posted in Muridke for around two years and had played an active role in action against electricity theft in the area. His efforts reportedly included operations against suspected power thieves and those involved in large-scale electricity theft.
On the day of the incident, LESCO staff members cut a birthday cake for Phularwan at his office after he completed his official duties. His family had also arranged a birthday celebration at home and remained in contact with him as he left the office.
Phularwan later departed for Lahore in his official vehicle. When he reached a section of GT Road near Muridke, unidentified armed men, who had apparently been waiting for him, opened fire on his vehicle.
The XEN sustained multiple bullet wounds, including injuries to his arm. One of the bullets struck his head, leaving him critically injured. He died at the scene, while the attackers took advantage of darkness and fled from the area.
The news of his killing spread rapidly across Muridke and surrounding areas, causing concern among local residents and LESCO employees.
A heavy police contingent reached the scene shortly after the incident and cordoned off the area. Police teams collected evidence and launched a search operation to trace the attackers.
District Police Officer (DPO) Sheikhupura Bilal Zafar Sheikh told this correspondent that several teams had been formed to investigate the murder and arrest those responsible. He said police were conducting a search operation in the area and were working to determine the motive behind the attack.
Phularwan originally belonged to Okara and had gained recognition among colleagues for taking action against major electricity theft networks. His killing has raised concerns among LESCO officials and employees working in the field, particularly those involved in anti-theft operations.
Police officials said further investigation was under way, while efforts continued to identify and apprehend the assailants.
