Man charged after anti-muslim attacks in Edinburgh injure five

A major security investigation is underway in Scotland after a 36-year-old man was charged in connection with a series of violent attacks in Edinburgh that left five people injured, in incidents now being treated as potentially motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.

According to Police Scotland, the suspect—identified as a 36-year-old white Scottish man—was arrested after a rapid response operation on Friday, June 19, 2026. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that formal charges have been filed and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. The accused is expected to appear in court in due course.

Police said there is “no further threat to the public,” but investigations remain ongoing, with counter-terrorism officers assisting in examining the full circumstances surrounding the attacks.

The incidents began late Friday evening when emergency services received multiple distress calls reporting violent activity across different parts of the city. Authorities said the suspect was involved in a series of assaults, robberies, vandalism, and threats across Edinburgh, injuring five men aged between 22 and 39.

The Scottish Association of Mosques echoed similar concerns, noting increased calls for anti-migrant protests and a rise in inflammatory language in recent weeks. “These developments should concern everyone, regardless of faith or background,” it said in a statement.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivity across the United Kingdom over immigration, integration, and rising extremist narratives, following several recent violent events that have sparked public unrest and political debate.
