Mbappe brace fires Real Madrid to 2-1 El Clasico win over Barcelona

Kylian Mbappe delivered a decisive performance as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday, handing the La Liga leaders their first domestic defeat of the season and giving Jose Mourinho a memorable victory in his return to El Clasico.

The French forward scored once in each half, while Raphinha briefly brought Barcelona level after the break. Mbappe’s late winner ultimately settled a fiercely contested encounter and reduced the gap between the rivals to three points.

The result also marked Barcelona’s second consecutive defeat following their Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the week.

Madrid, meanwhile, secured their fifth successive victory across all competitions despite missing suspended winger Vinicius Junior.

Mbappe Makes the Difference

The opening half was closely contested, with both sides struggling to create clear opportunities. However, Madrid broke the deadlock when Mbappe capitalised on a defensive clearance from Gerard Martin, deflecting the ball into the net to give the visitors the lead.

Barcelona had opportunities to respond, but teenage winger Lamine Yamal missed a promising chance before the interval.

Raphinha eventually restored parity shortly after the hour mark, firing through Jude Bellingham’s legs after receiving a pass from Pedri. The Brazilian’s strike reignited Barcelona’s hopes of protecting their home record.

Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, deputising for the unavailable Thibaut Courtois, made several important saves to keep his team in the contest.

Mourinho Celebrates Statement Victory

With Barcelona pushing forward for a winner, Madrid struck decisively on the counterattack. Eduardo Camavinga advanced into the penalty area before cutting the ball back for Mbappe, who finished into an unguarded net to complete his brace.

The goal also brought Mbappe’s tally to 100 goals for Real Madrid since joining the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.

Mourinho praised his players’ organisation, concentration and courage against Barcelona’s pressing game.

Mbappe, however, insisted that the victory must not lead to complacency, stressing that Madrid needed to maintain the same intensity in their upcoming fixtures.

The result offers Madrid renewed confidence under Mourinho, while Barcelona must regroup quickly after a difficult week that has disrupted their impressive start to the campaign.
