LAHORE: Pakistan opening batter Saim Ayub has been released from the national ODI squad during the ongoing tri-nation series featuring England and Sri Lanka, with Sahibzada Farhan named as his replacement.
The decision comes after Pakistan’s dramatic one-wicket victory over England on Sunday, which secured the hosts a place in the tournament final. Saim reportedly requested permission to return to domestic cricket, hoping to rediscover his batting form through regular match practice.
“I want to improve my performance by playing domestic cricket,” Saim said, explaining his decision.
The 24-year-old left-handed opener has struggled in the current competition, scoring just 21 runs across three matches. His disappointing returns have raised questions about his recent form, although his overall ODI record remains impressive.
Since making his international debut in the format, Saim has scored 772 runs in 20 matches at an average of 40.63, including three centuries and three half-centuries.
However, his recent performances tell a different story. In his last 11 ODI innings, he has accumulated 257 runs at an average of 23.36, managing only two half-centuries.
Sahibzada Farhan Gets Another ODI Opportunity
Farhan has been brought into the squad for the remainder of the tri-series. The right-handed batter currently leads Pakistan’s T20I team and will now have an opportunity to strengthen his credentials in the 50-over format.
His ODI experience remains limited, with six appearances yielding 101 runs at an average of 16.83.
The change comes as Pakistan look to maintain their momentum following a remarkable comeback against England at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
Chasing 243 runs, Pakistan were struggling at 154-9 before Shadab Khan’s unbeaten 113 and an unbroken 89-run partnership with Haris Rauf turned the contest around.
Pakistan eventually reached the target with one wicket remaining, booking their place in the final.
For Saim, the return to domestic cricket offers a chance to rebuild confidence and address his recent struggles. Meanwhile, Farhan will look to make the most of his opportunity as Pakistan prepare for the decisive stage of the tournament.
