Karachi – Measles has taken an epidemic form in Sindh with the highest number of deaths recorded in the province this year.

According to details, the measles outbreak has once again reached alarming levels across Sindh and other parts of the country. Despite billions of rupees in funding and claims of preventive measures, the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in Sindh appears unable to control this deadly virus with the highest number of deaths recorded this year.

Official data released by sources from EPI shows that between January and May this year, 28,500 suspected measles cases were reported across the country. Out of these, 7,500 children were confirmed to have measles after laboratory testing.

During the first five months of this year, a total of 96 children have died due to measles across Pakistan. Sindh was the most affected province recording a shocking 53 deaths. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ranked second with 24 deaths followed by Punjab with 15 deaths and Balochistan with 4 deaths.

On the other hand, health officials stated that even a single reported case of measles reflects a collective failure of society. They admitted that they have not been able to create sufficient awareness among parents regarding vaccination while also emphasizing that parents are responsible for ensuring that their children complete their full immunization schedule.

Health officials further said that measles is currently present in all provinces of the country. However, compared to other provinces, Sindh has a better reporting system which is why more cases are recorded there. They added that instead of hiding cases, they should be reported so that timely action can be taken.
