Mohammad Rizwan’s alleged non-cooperation delays NCCIA probe

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Rizwan’s alleged lack of cooperation has reportedly slowed down an ongoing investigation by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), with officials planning to contact the wicketkeeper-batter again on Monday, sources said.

The NCCIA is investigating Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq after its cyber-patrolling activities reportedly flagged certain material as suspicious. However, sources stressed that the investigation remains at an early stage and that no offence has so far been established against either player.

According to NCCIA sources, investigators have repeatedly attempted to contact Rizwan and requested his cooperation. At times, officials were reportedly unable to establish contact, while on other occasions Rizwan indicated that he would consult his lawyer before proceeding.

Sources said the agency intends to make another attempt to contact the cricketer on Monday. If he does not cooperate, officials may consider issuing a formal notice and taking further action in accordance with the law.

A key part of the investigation involves a forensic examination of Rizwan’s mobile phone. Investigators want the analysis to be conducted in his presence, which they say is important for ensuring transparency and protecting the integrity of the process.

The agency has also considered conducting the forensic examination through an alternative procedure. However, sources said this could potentially result in data being lost, which would not be in the interests of either side.

Investigators have reportedly questioned Rizwan about various communications, but some of his responses were not considered satisfactory by the team. The forensic examination is expected to help investigators address remaining questions and establish whether the concerns identified during cyber-patrolling have any legal significance.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the matter involving the two cricketers.

Unlike Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq initially showed some hesitation but has subsequently cooperated with investigators. His mobile phone forensic examination has already begun, sources said. Once the forensic analysis and wider investigation are completed, the SIT will prepare its recommendations.

The NCCIA has emphasized that the process is being conducted carefully in light of judicial directions. Sources also said the investigation does not conflict with the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct, adding that neither the NCCIA has contacted the ICC nor has the international governing body contacted the agency over the matter.

To facilitate Rizwan’s participation, the agency has reportedly offered to send its investigation team to him if he is unable to visit the NCCIA office.

Sources said the objective is to establish the facts and, if no violation is found, clear the players at the earliest possible stage.

The NCCIA also responded to social media campaigns surrounding Rizwan, saying those attempting to create such campaigns are not acting in the cricketer’s best interests.
