Multan tops Pakistan’s pollution charts as Lahore leads globally

Multan has emerged as the most polluted city in Pakistan, while Lahore has topped the list of the world’s major cities with the worst air quality, according to air pollution data released on Tuesday.

Data from an international environmental monitoring website showed that Lahore recorded a particulate matter (PM) level of 447 on the Air Quality Index (AQI), while Multan recorded an even higher reading of 490.

Faisalabad also reported severe air pollution, with particulate matter levels reaching 461. Rahim Yar Khan recorded a reading of 457, placing both cities among the most polluted urban centres in the country.

The worsening air quality has raised concerns about the health risks posed by increasing smog and airborne pollutants. Residents, particularly children, elderly people and those with respiratory problems, face greater risks from prolonged exposure to polluted air.

Meanwhile, dense fog has also disrupted traffic on major roads in Punjab. The M-3 Motorway was closed from Faizpur to Jaranwala due to poor visibility.

The Motorway Police advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel during foggy conditions and prioritise travelling between 10am and 6pm when visibility is generally better.

Motorists were also urged to follow safety instructions and remain cautious while travelling to prevent accidents amid the deteriorating weather conditions.
