Violence erupted in Belfast earlier this week following a knife attack that left several people injured. Authorities later charged a Sudanese national, Hadi Alodid, with attempted murder. The incident sparked demonstrations that quickly escalated into clashes in parts of the Northern Irish capital.

As tensions grew, Musk used his social media platform X to share posts from anti-immigration activist Tommy Robinson and others calling for public protests. In one message to his followers, Musk argued that repeated and vocal demonstrations were necessary if people wanted political change. The post attracted widespread attention and further fueled debate online.

According to a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, Musk played a significant role in boosting the visibility of content linked to the Belfast unrest. Researchers found that posts shared by Musk, Robinson, and British political figure Rupert Lowe generated more than 115 million views combined. Musk’s own activity reportedly accounted for over half of that total.

The watchdog group stated that Musk’s influence as both the owner of X and one of the platform’s most followed users gives him exceptional power to shape public discussion. The organization argued that this influence carries a responsibility to prevent the spread of content that could inflame tensions during sensitive situations.

Imran Ahmed, the group’s founder and chief executive, said the findings showed Musk had amplified anti-migrant narratives to a massive audience at a time when communities were already dealing with unrest and violence. Ahmed claimed that no other individual on the platform had contributed more to the spread of such content during the Belfast disturbances.

The report also highlighted thousands of comments responding to posts by Musk, Robinson, and Lowe. Researchers said many of these messages contained calls for violence against immigrants. More than 3,900 comments allegedly promoted acts such as attacks and other criminal behavior, with the majority appearing under Robinson’s posts.

X did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the findings.

The controversy has also renewed attention on changes made to the platform after Musk purchased Twitter in 2022 and later rebranded it as X. Several accounts that had previously been suspended, including that of Tommy Robinson, were restored under the new ownership. Critics argue that these decisions have allowed controversial figures to regain large audiences and influence online discussions.

The findings come as British regulators continue to warn about the role social media can play in spreading hatred and encouraging unlawful behavior. Media watchdog Ofcom recently cautioned that online platforms face increasing risks of being used to provoke violence and deepen social divisions.

Despite the criticism, Musk experienced a major financial triumph this week. His fortune surged after shares of SpaceX made a highly successful debut on Wall Street. The company raised more than $75 billion through what has been described as the largest public offering in history, pushing Musk’s wealth beyond the one trillion dollar mark and setting a new record in global business.
