The unrest began after videos of the attack circulated widely on social media, fuelling anger and leading to demonstrations that quickly turned violent. Groups of masked individuals took to the streets in several areas of Northern Ireland, setting fire to houses, vehicles and other property while clashing with police.

In a public statement, the family of the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, urged people not to use the incident as a reason to spread hatred or division. They stressed that violence was not the answer and called for any demonstrations to remain peaceful. The family also highlighted the positive role many migrants play in society and said they did not want the tragedy to be used to target innocent people.

The appeal came as a Sudanese national appeared in court charged with attempted murder in connection with the attack. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Hadi Alodid, was remanded in custody. Court proceedings heard that Ogilvie, who is in his forties, suffered serious injuries to his face and back and lost an eye during the attack.

Political leaders across the United Kingdom strongly condemned the violence that followed. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the knife attack as a serious matter but said that attacking homes and forcing families to flee was unacceptable. He warned that anyone involved in the disorder would face legal consequences.

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill also criticised those responsible for the attacks, describing their actions as cowardly and deeply damaging to local communities. Authorities said many of the people targeted during the unrest were members of ethnic minority groups.

Several residents described scenes of chaos as fires spread through neighbourhoods. One homeowner said he watched helplessly as his property was set ablaze despite informing those responsible that the vehicles and house belonged to him. Emergency services were forced to assist families trapped by the violence, including helping residents escape from burning buildings.

Police and local leaders expressed concern about the role social media played in escalating tensions. Videos and posts related to the stabbing spread rapidly online throughout the day, with some accounts encouraging protests and confrontations. Officials said misinformation and inflammatory content contributed to the scale of the unrest.

Justice Minister Naomi Long said some individuals had exploited public fear and anger following the attack to target people solely because of their race or background. She warned that outside groups and online activists were attempting to inflame divisions within Northern Ireland.

Police announced additional officers would be deployed to maintain order and prevent further violence. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said the rioters had not only targeted ethnic minorities but had also harmed the wider community through their actions.

The disturbances come amid broader debates about immigration across the United Kingdom. Recent years have seen growing tensions surrounding migration and asylum policies, while several incidents involving violent crime have fuelled heated public discussion. Northern Ireland, which historically experienced lower levels of immigration, has also witnessed a rise in racist incidents in recent years.

As investigations continue into both the knife attack and the subsequent disorder, authorities are urging residents to reject hatred and allow the justice system to handle the case through legal channels.
