NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is almost ready for its journey into space with only two days left before its planned launch. The mission is being described as NASA’s next major astrophysics project after the James Webb Space Telescope.
The Roman telescope will launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Its scientific observations are expected to begin in January 2027. Faculty members and students from the University of Arizona are also expected to be at Cape Canaveral to witness the launch.
The Roman Space Telescope will have a different role from the James Webb Space Telescope.
While Webb is designed to study small areas of the universe in great detail Roman will scan much larger areas much faster. Both telescopes can observe infrared light allowing scientists to combine data from the two missions to learn more about the universe.
Roman has a 7.9-foot wide main mirror similar in size to Hubble’s mirror. It carries two major scientific instruments.
The Coronagraph Instrument will block and filter the bright light from stars helping scientists study exoplanets and the disks of material around them.
The Wide Field Instrument will capture images of much larger areas of space while offering sensitivity similar to Hubble’s cameras.
NASA says Hubble has observed only about 0.1 percent of the night sky during more than 30 years of work. In comparison Roman could eventually survey the entire sky at a similar level of detail.
The mission is expected to give scientists a much broader view of space and help them better understand galaxies stars planets and the history of the universe
