Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik has said that witnessing the charred bodies of 14 children at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) made him realise that the country was not safe.

Speaking at the Health and Education Summit held at Lahore Expo Centre, Malik said discussions about social justice would remain meaningless unless poor and wealthy citizens had access to equal healthcare facilities.

The summit was attended by representatives and senior officials from various universities, with Malik serving as the chief guest.

Recalling the tragic incident at PIMS, the federal minister said seeing the burned bodies of 14 children was deeply distressing and raised serious questions about public safety and the country’s healthcare system.

Malik stressed that the health system could not improve unless children from all sections of society received quality treatment at public hospitals.

“Until our children also receive treatment at government hospitals, the healthcare system will not improve,” he said, adding that providing proper facilities to children from underprivileged families was essential for genuine human development.

The minister emphasised the need to reduce disparities in healthcare and ensure that public hospitals provide services comparable to those available to wealthier citizens.

Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Mashhood said political differences had their place, but the country’s future was closely linked to its younger generation.

He said the PML-N was also working on initiatives aimed at supporting and empowering young people.
