KARACHI: A newborn baby has allegedly gone missing from a private hospital near Gol Market in Nazimabad No. 3, Karachi, prompting police to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the family, the woman, identified as Sobia, was taken to the private hospital for delivery after being under the care of a doctor at the same facility throughout her pregnancy. The family alleged that after the woman underwent an operation, the doctor told them that there was no baby.

The woman’s husband claimed that he had been taking his pregnant wife to the same doctor for regular check-ups for nine months. According to him, the doctor who had been monitoring the pregnancy had called the woman to the hospital during the night for delivery.

The family has raised serious questions over what happened during the delivery and has sought answers from the hospital administration. The allegations have also triggered anger among relatives and other people who gathered at the hospital.

In response to the incident, an agitated group reportedly vandalised parts of the private hospital. Police officials said that the hospital administration had not yet provided its position on the allegations at the time of the initial investigation.

Police subsequently took Sobia to the Police Services Hospital, where she is undergoing a medical examination. Doctors are conducting different medical tests to establish her condition and determine whether there is any medical evidence relevant to the allegations. According to police officials, the reports of the tests are expected to be available within one to two days.

Meanwhile, investigators have obtained the private hospital’s records as part of the inquiry. Police are also collecting and examining CCTV footage from the hospital to reconstruct the events surrounding the woman’s admission, operation and alleged delivery.

Police officials said investigators are considering the possibility that the woman who underwent regular check-ups at the hospital and the woman who arrived for delivery may not have been the same person.

The hospital administration has also reportedly raised questions about the identity of the woman and expressed suspicion regarding the circumstances of the case. Police are examining the claims from all sides before reaching any conclusion.

According to hospital sources, the woman had reportedly been receiving treatment at the facility since the beginning of her pregnancy. Her check-ups were allegedly conducted on the scheduled dates throughout the pregnancy.

Hospital sources further claimed that there was a possibility that another woman had arrived at the hospital at the time of delivery. They said investigators were examining whether a family dispute could have played a role in the incident and led to the current controversy.

Hospital officials have reportedly recorded a formal statement with police regarding the matter. Investigators are also collecting CCTV footage and other available records that could help establish who entered and left the hospital during the relevant period.

Police have not yet confirmed whether a newborn was actually delivered at the hospital or what happened to the alleged child. Officials said the medical examination, hospital records, CCTV footage and statements from the family and hospital staff would be important in determining the facts.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are examining multiple possibilities. Authorities have urged that no final conclusion be drawn until the available evidence has been reviewed and the medical and investigative reports are completed.
