In Asia, Nintendo appeared to reverse the bans by Monday morning. Affected users encountered a specific error code on September 5 that stripped their consoles of online connectivity and access to game updates, the eShop, multiplayer and digital or Game-Key Card titles.

The massive bans sparked online frustration and panic among players across various platforms, including Reddit. The inability to play legitimate and new game cartridges was particularly disturbing for users.

Initial responses from Nintendo support agents blamed illegal software, adding to the confusion. However, later Nintendo Support representatives attributed the incident to a temporary system fault rather than a deliberate piracy crackdown.

The company has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the sudden bans or how many users were affected.

Despite the weekend fuss and a modest 1.03 percent dip in Nintendo stock, analysts view the event as a short-lived service failure rather than a threat to hardware sales.

Such incidents are not new. They reflect previous launch windows in which users purchased used physical games that had been illegally replicated. However, legitimate buyers were able to resolve the issue through customer support.

Nintendo’s hardline policies on hardware bans have previously sparked international backlash, including legal challenges in Brazil over how device bans affect second-hand buyers who unintentionally purchase flagged consoles.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is an upgraded gaming console launched on June 2, 2025, and supports both physical and digital games.
