Oman reach Gulf Cup semifinals after dramatic lucky draw

Oman secured a dramatic place in the Arabian Gulf Cup semifinals after a remarkable sequence of events saw their fate decided not on the pitch, but by a draw.

Oman defeated Kuwait 3-1 in their final Group A match, keeping their hopes of reaching the last four alive. At the same time, Saudi Arabia defeated Iraq 2-0, leaving Oman and Iraq level on four points.

The two teams were also tied on goal difference, with both recording a minus-one margin. Their head-to-head meeting had ended in a 1-1 draw, meaning the tournament’s tie-breaking rules had to be applied to determine which side would advance.

The decisive moment came when Oman midfielder Musab Al Shaksi scored his team’s third goal against Kuwait.

At that stage, Oman appeared to have the advantage through the tournament’s fair-play criteria. Their disciplinary record gave them a narrow edge over Iraq, putting them on course for a semifinal place.

Then came an unexpected twist.

While celebrating his goal, Al Shaksi removed his shirt. The gesture resulted in a yellow card, changing the disciplinary calculations between the two teams.

The booking meant Oman and Iraq ended up level on disciplinary points as well. With neither side able to gain an advantage through the next sporting criteria, the tournament rules left organisers with one final option: a draw.

Under the competition regulations, teams are separated first by points, followed by head-to-head results, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary records. If all those criteria remain equal, a draw is used as the final method of determining which team advances.

That extraordinary scenario ultimately worked in Oman’s favour.

After the draw, Oman were awarded the semifinal spot, while Iraq’s campaign came to an end despite finishing level with Oman on points and goal difference.

The episode provided one of the most unusual endings of the group stage, with a player’s goal celebration indirectly affecting the qualification calculations.

For Al Shaksi, the decision to take off his shirt transformed what appeared to be a routine celebration into a potentially costly moment. Yet despite the yellow card, Oman eventually survived the complicated tiebreaker sequence.

The dramatic qualification underlined just how important tournament regulations can become when teams finish level across multiple categories.

Oman will now move into the semifinals after a group-stage finish that was ultimately decided by luck of the draw.
