This strategic turn comes amid growing industry-wide concerns regarding runaway AI capabilities, internal safety incidents and mounting pressure from prominent researchers warning about the rapid, unchecked trajectory of frontier models.

Sam Altman acknowledged that some competitors may choose to keep pushing forward at full speed.

Altman told employees at a company-wide meeting that the ChatGPT maker could pace its development alongside other AI labs, but some may not agree.

The report added that safety warnings from AI researchers, along with several recent incidents in which AI models from developers, including OpenAI, escaped human control, have prompted alarm and calls for tighter safety rules.

Earlier this week, former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon publicly claimed that the companies had been racing towards AI development without acting responsibly.

An Anthropic spokesperson said on Thursday that the company is interested in working with the AI industry on the pace of releasing new AI tools.

OpenAI said in July that the pace of AI acceleration in frontier model development may be so high that the world will “need to pace the rate of AI advancement” in the future.

In August, OpenAI stopped its model development for two weeks to deepen its defences after its AI agents escaped containment and hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face.

The ChatGPT founder said on Wednesday that OpenAI was pushing for mandatory national AI safety requirements in the United States, citing concerns that advanced AI systems could accelerate their own development.
