Pakistan and China have urged the international community to strengthen mechanisms for implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions. The two countries stressed that decisions adopted by the Council must be enforced in a timely and impartial manner to maintain international peace and security.

The call was made during a special meeting at the United Nations focused on bridging the gap between the adoption of resolutions and their implementation on the ground.

Speaking at the meeting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said Security Council resolutions are legal obligations under the UN Charter and should not remain limited to political commitments or statements of intent.

He warned that selective implementation of resolutions weakens the credibility and authority of the Security Council. According to him, delays in enforcing decisions prolong conflicts, deepen humanitarian crises and create instability in different regions of the world.

The Pakistani envoy highlighted the situations in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine as examples of disputes that remain unresolved due to the lack of implementation of relevant UN resolutions. He said the continued delay in resolving such issues has serious implications for regional and international peace.

Senior UN officials and international experts participating in the meeting underlined that implementation is essential for the effectiveness of the Security Council. They emphasized the need for clear mandates, realistic goals, sufficient resources and regular monitoring to ensure that resolutions lead to practical outcomes.

Pakistan proposed several measures to improve implementation. These included annual reviews of pending resolutions, stronger monitoring systems, clearer implementation frameworks and enhanced follow-up procedures.

The proposals also called for closer coordination between the United Nations, peacekeeping missions and regional organizations to support the execution of Security Council decisions.

Representatives from member states welcomed the initiative and expressed support for efforts aimed at improving the implementation process. Participants agreed that Security Council resolutions should be practical, actionable and backed by sustained diplomatic engagement.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation and support for the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter.

Pakistan and China reaffirmed their support for an effective and credible Security Council capable of ensuring that its decisions are implemented fairly, consistently and without delay.
