Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed confidence that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached between the United States and Iran following recent diplomatic engagements in Switzerland could serve as the foundation for a comprehensive and lasting agreement between the two countries.
Speaking in the National Assembly, the prime minister briefed lawmakers on the latest diplomatic developments, highlighting Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran. He described the progress made during talks held in the Swiss resort town of Burgenstock as a positive step toward regional peace and stability.
According to the premier, delegations from the United States and Iran participated in extensive negotiations that began on Sunday and continued late into the night before concluding after midnight on Monday. Pakistan and Qatar acted as mediators during the discussions, helping both sides engage in constructive dialogue on a range of sensitive issues.
“Pakistan made sincere and dedicated efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides and encourage a peaceful resolution through dialogue,” the prime minister told the House.
Shehbaz Sharif said the negotiations had resulted in the establishment of a ceasefire between Iran and the United States, creating an environment conducive to further diplomatic engagement. He added that technical-level talks would continue over the next two months to address several complex matters that remain under discussion.
The prime minister noted that the agenda of the ongoing negotiations includes Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile issues, sanctions relief measures and the release of frozen Iranian assets. He expressed hope that continued engagement would help both sides reach mutually acceptable solutions.
“If the current process remains on track, the memorandum of understanding could develop into a permanent and sustainable agreement within the next 60 days,” he said, stressing that successful negotiations would represent a significant breakthrough for regional and international diplomacy.
The premier also credited Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for helping ease tensions during a critical period and said the country’s role in the talks had been appreciated by the international community. He described the development as an important diplomatic success and congratulated the nation, parliament and political leadership for supporting efforts aimed at promoting peace.
During his address, Shehbaz Sharif revealed that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was expected to arrive in Islamabad later on Tuesday at Pakistan’s invitation. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding economic cooperation and discussing regional security issues.
