LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has urged the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to play an urgent and effective role in securing the safe release and early return of 10 Pakistani seafarers being held captive aboard MT Honour 25.

Senator Ishaq Dar made the request during a meeting with IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez in London, where the two sides discussed maritime security, regulatory reforms and the development of Pakistan’s maritime sector.

The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to the IMO and appreciated its role as the principal international regulatory body responsible for promoting safe, secure and efficient international shipping.

Senator Dar thanked the IMO Secretary-General for his support for ongoing efforts to secure the safe release of the Pakistani seafarers and called for urgent institutional intervention to facilitate their early return.

The two sides also discussed Pakistan’s continued efforts to strengthen maritime governance and implement international maritime standards.

Senator Dar highlighted Pakistan’s plans to further develop its blue economy and strengthen the country’s maritime sector through improved governance, regulatory reforms and compliance with international standards.

The meeting also focused on further strengthening Pakistan-IMO cooperation in maritime safety and security, regulatory frameworks and the development of Pakistan’s maritime capabilities.

The issue of the 10 Pakistani seafarers aboard MT Honour 25 remains a key humanitarian concern, with Pakistan seeking coordinated international efforts to ensure their safe and early return home.
