Pakistan unveils 10-year shark conservation plan

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has unveiled a 10-year national plan aimed at protecting sharks, promoting sustainable fishing practices and strengthening the long-term management of Pakistan’s marine resources.

Speaking about the initiative, the federal minister said Pakistan aims to establish itself as a leading country in sustainable shark fisheries by 2035. He stressed that the government would focus on protecting shark populations while also supporting fishing communities that depend on marine resources for their livelihoods.

According to the minister, the first five years of the programme could require funding of up to $5 million. The proposed plan includes measures to curb illegal shark finning, a practice that poses a serious threat to shark populations and marine ecosystems.

The government also plans to reduce the number of sharks killed accidentally during fishing operations. Authorities will work to introduce more responsible fishing practices and protect important marine habitats where sharks feed, breed and migrate.

Chaudhry said Pakistan would conduct annual assessments of shark populations and stocks to monitor their numbers and determine whether conservation measures are producing the desired results. The data collected through these assessments will help authorities improve fisheries management and take timely action when shark populations face increased pressure.

The 10-year strategy also seeks to support fishing communities by creating alternative sources of income. The government believes that providing other livelihood opportunities can reduce excessive dependence on shark fishing and encourage local communities to participate in conservation efforts.

The federal minister said the government would also strengthen enforcement of existing laws related to shark conservation. Authorities will focus on improving monitoring and ensuring that fishing activities comply with national regulations and international conservation standards.

Chaudhry added that protecting sharks is not only important for maintaining marine biodiversity but also forms part of Pakistan’s responsibilities under international environmental agreements. He said the new strategy would help balance the economic needs of fishing communities with the need to preserve the country’s marine ecosystems for future generations.
