London: Pakistani-born City of London Police Commander Umer Khan has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London, one of the capital’s most historic civic honours, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to policing, public safety, and community cohesion.

The honour was conferred in a formal ceremony in London, celebrating Commander Khan’s long and distinguished career in UK law enforcement and his leadership in strengthening trust between police and diverse communities.

Commander Khan currently serves in a senior operational and security leadership role within City of London Police, where he has been credited with advancing modern policing strategies focused on fraud prevention, public protection, and community engagement in the capital’s financial district.

He has served in British policing for over three decades, including nearly 27 years with Greater Manchester Police. During his career, he has been involved in major public order and counter-terrorism related policing operations, including community reassurance work following the 2001 Oldham disturbances and operational support in the aftermath of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack.

Born in Pakistan and raised in the United Kingdom from a young age, Commander Khan’s career has often been cited as an example of long-term public service within British institutions. He was awarded an OBE in 2019 for services to policing and community cohesion.
