PESHAWAR: A young girl was killed and two children were injured in a hand grenade explosion in Peshawar’s Faqirabad area on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred in Saidabad, where the children were reportedly playing near the roadside when the explosion took place. Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene and shifted the victim’s body and the injured children to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to a senior police official, preliminary evidence suggests the children may have been handling a hand grenade before it exploded. Investigators recovered the safety lever (clip) of the grenade from the site, strengthening the initial assessment that the explosive device detonated while the children were playing.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) also inspected the scene and confirmed that the explosion was caused by a hand grenade. Forensic experts collected evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police have launched an inquiry to determine how the explosive device ended up in the area and whether negligence or any criminal activity was involved. Authorities are examining all aspects of the case.
Initial police information indicated that a man identified as Ajmal, reportedly involved in the scrap business, is linked to the premises being investigated. However, officials said it is too early to draw conclusions, and further investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragic explosion has once again highlighted the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance and abandoned explosive devices, particularly in residential areas where children may unknowingly come into contact with them. Authorities have urged the public to immediately report any suspicious object to law enforcement agencies and avoid touching unidentified items.
Police said further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
