Phyllida Law dies at 94 after remarkable acting career

Acclaimed British actress Phyllida Law, best known as the mother of actresses Dame Emma Thompson and Sophie Thompson, has died at the age of 94. The veteran performer passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, July 27, according to her manager Jacky Leggo.

Confirming the heartbreaking news, Leggo paid tribute to Law and described her as a “beautiful person inside and out.” Her death marks the end of a remarkable career that lasted for around eight decades and established her as one of Britain’s most respected stage and screen performers.

Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law developed a passion for acting at an early age and went on to build an extensive body of work across television, film and theatre. Throughout her long career, she appeared in a wide variety of productions and became a familiar face to audiences across generations.

Her television credits included popular British programmes such as Midsomer Murders, Foyle’s War, Doc Martin and New Tricks. She also made an impact on the big screen, appearing in films including Anna Karenina, Saving Grace and Miss Potter.

One particularly special aspect of Law’s career was her opportunity to work alongside her daughters. She shared the screen with Sophie Thompson in the 1996 adaptation of Emma. She also appeared with Emma Thompson in several acclaimed projects, including Peter’s Friends, Much Ado About Nothing and The Winter Guest.

Law’s connection with Emma continued into animation and family entertainment when she provided the voice of Mrs. Partridge in the 2005 film Nanny McPhee, which starred Emma Thompson in the title role. Their professional collaborations added a memorable family dimension to Law’s already distinguished career.

Beyond television and film, Law enjoyed an equally impressive stage career. She performed alongside celebrated actors including Alec Guinness and John Hurt and was also part of the original London cast of La Cage Aux Folles. Her work in theatre further demonstrated her versatility and enduring reputation as a performer.

In recognition of her contribution to drama and charitable causes, Law was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2014. The honour reflected her decades of work in the entertainment industry as well as her commitment to charitable activities.

Following news of her death, Law’s family and loved ones began sharing tributes. Her granddaughter Gaia paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, writing, “Rest well my queen.”
