Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the provincial governments to work together with the federal administration to finalize a comprehensive National Agriculture Policy as soon as possible. He stressed that close coordination between all stakeholders is essential to modernize Pakistan’s agricultural sector and strengthen food security.
The directive came during a high-level meeting on the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, where officials reviewed key reforms in the agriculture sector, discussed the restructuring of the ministry, and examined progress on the proposed national policy.
During the meeting, the prime minister instructed authorities to establish an apex forum that will oversee agricultural reforms across the country. The forum will hold monthly meetings to monitor the implementation of the Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan, identify challenges, and ensure that development initiatives remain on track.
To improve farmers’ access to financial support, Shehbaz Sharif also ordered the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign about the Zarai Taraqiati loan program. He emphasized that farmers should receive clear information about affordable agricultural financing so they can invest in quality seeds, modern machinery, efficient irrigation systems, and timely fertilizer supplies. According to the prime minister, these measures will help increase crop yields and improve farm productivity.
The meeting also focused on reducing post-harvest losses by strengthening value addition, expanding modern warehousing facilities, and improving storage systems for agricultural produce. The prime minister noted that better storage infrastructure would reduce waste, preserve crop quality, and enable farmers to earn higher profits by selling their produce at more favorable market prices.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Pakistan’s agriculture sector through innovation, better planning, and stronger cooperation between federal and provincial authorities. Officials believe these reforms will enhance productivity, support farmers’ livelihoods, and contribute to long-term economic growth.
