Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government of allowing militants to return to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa claiming that the security situation in the province had deteriorated significantly in recent months.
Addressing a parliamentary party meeting of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) the prime minister said Pakistan had largely overcome terrorism by 2018 after politicians and citizens made considerable sacrifices to restore peace.
He praised the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for their continued sacrifices for the country saying their contributions had played an important role in establishing stability in the province.
According to the prime minister his government had made repeated efforts over the past two and a half years to improve relations with the provincial administration and address security concerns. He said assurances of cooperation had also been extended to former chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur while meetings had taken place with Sohail Afridi.
Shehbaz Sharif maintained that the federal government had attempted to work with the provincial government but accused the PTI leadership of obstructing development and undermining efforts to improve the situation.
He further claimed that negotiations had been close to reaching an agreement including a consensus on strengthening the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However he alleged that the process was derailed before an understanding could be finalized.
The prime minister said the decision to consider governor’s rule had been taken after other efforts failed. He also criticized the PTI leadership accusing it of not speaking firmly enough against militant groups.
Sharif alleged that the PTI negotiating team had sought further consultations with the provincial government at a critical stage causing the talks to collapse. These assertions reflected the federal government’s position amid growing political disagreements over security and provincial governance.
The controversy comes as tensions continue between the federal government and PTI over the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the possibility of imposing governor’s rule.
The prime minister’s remarks underline the deep political divisions surrounding counterterrorism policy negotiations and responsibility for maintaining security in the province. His allegations represent the federal government’s stated position and were not independently established by the supplied report.
