ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran in his role as mediator, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for Pakistan in efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the memorandum had already been signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian before being endorsed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The agreement, aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, has officially entered into force. The memorandum lays the groundwork for further negotiations between Washington and Tehran on broader political, economic, and security issues.

The Prime Minister’s Office described the development as an important step toward regional stability and peaceful dialogue. Prime Minister Shehbaz is expected to depart for Switzerland shortly after the signing ceremony.

US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, while Iranian state media released images showing President Masoud Pezeshkian signing the document in Tehran.

The breakthrough agreement is being viewed as a major diplomatic achievement that could help reduce regional tensions and restore stability to global energy markets.
