Prince Harry has faced criticism over what royal commentator and writer Chris Riches described as an attempt to balance the status of a private citizen with the privileges associated with the royal family.
Writing for the Daily Express, Riches said King Charles had made clear that Harry and his wife Meghan were no longer working royals and would be treated as “private citizens”.
The couple, Riches wrote, had responded by saying they would prefer to be regarded as “public figures”.
“If they want to be treated as celebrities, marketing their private life to accumulate wealth, that is fine — but while Meghan counts her cash, Harry cannot then cry about privacy,” Riches wrote.
“And if Harry gets his way and the couple surround themselves with a ring of steel, how will that affect Meghan’s businesses or acting career?”
Riches also questioned the couple’s request for taxpayer-funded armed protection from the Metropolitan Police, which he said is usually provided to working royals.
“So are they working for the nation or working for themselves?” he wrote.
He concluded that the couple were “sitting on a fence” and would eventually have to decide how they wanted to be regarded.
