Punjab e-bike scheme gets 432,000 registrations

The second phase of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s E-Bike Scheme has received an overwhelming response, with around 432,000 students registering within just two days of the programme’s launch.

According to Punjab Transport Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch, applications from approximately 265,000 students are currently being submitted, while the processing of more than 108,000 applications has already been completed.

The scheme has been introduced on the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to facilitate students with affordable and environmentally friendly transport. Eligible students can submit their applications through the official scheme portal until October 4, 2026.

Applicants must have a Punjab domicile or CNIC and should be regular students enrolled in public or private degree colleges or universities recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

The eligibility criteria require applicants to be at least 18 years old and hold either a learner’s permit or a valid motorcycle driving licence. The scheme also limits eligibility to one student per family.

Under the programme, students will not have to make an upfront down payment for the electric bikes. The Punjab government will cover the interest and insurance costs, while the student will pay a monthly instalment of Rs3,028.

The government will also provide a helmet and safety rod free of charge with every electric bike. Selected students will receive two days of training to familiarise them with the safe operation and use of the e-bikes.

The provincial government aims to make the process easier for students and has directed relevant authorities to ensure that successful applicants receive their electric bikes within six weeks after completion of the application process.

The large number of registrations in the first two days highlights strong demand among Punjab’s students for affordable personal transportation and reflects growing interest in electric mobility.
